The Rose and Crown Hotel is a 14th-century posting house, lovingly restored over the centuries to a modern-day hotel. It is located within walking distance of Colchester town centre and accessible to the historic sights of East Anglia.

Imagine sleeping in a 14th-century room, with all the amenities of the modern day. Choose from either the historic oakbeamed rooms located in the original house or the more contemporary rooms in the new wing. Colchester Zoo (6 km) - One of England's finest zoos, Colchester Zoo has over 200 types of animals. Visitors can meet the elephants, handle a snake, and see parrots, seals, penguins and birds of prey all appearing in informative daily displays.

Colchester Castle Museum (1 km) - The largest Norman castle keep in Europe - built over the remains of the magnificent Roman Temple of Claudius which was destroyed by Boudicca in AD60. Colchester was the first capital of Roman Britain, and the archaeological collections

The Beth Chatto Gardens (6 km) - Begun almost 40 years ago, when Beth Chatto and her late husband began working on acres of wasteland. Now an area of landscaped gardens with many unusual plants grown in a variety of conditions. There is a large retail nursery producing a wide range of plants as well as a seasonal tea room serving light refreshments

Layer Marney Tower (11 km) - The tallest Tudor gatehouse in the country, intended to be the entrance to a courtyard which would have rivalled Hampton Court Palace. The death of Henry, 1st Lord Marney in 1523, and of his son in 1525, meant that the building work ceased before completion.

Paycocke's (16 km) - This timber-framed house is a fine example of a medieval merchant's home. It was completed in about 1505 and has interesting carvings on the outside timbers, including the Paycocke trade sign. Inside there are further elaborate carvings and linenfold panels

St John's Abbey Gate (1 km) - The remains of the Benedictine Abbey of St John

Lexden Earthworks and Bluebottle Grove, Colchester (3 km) - Part of a series of earthworks built to protect Iron Age Colchester

Mistley Towers (12 km) - All that remains of the grand hall and church, designed by Robert Adam, are the lodges built in 1782 for the hall, and two square towers, topped with drums and domes which came from an earlier church.

Directions:
From London: Take junction 28 off the m25 onto the a12 (e). Then take the Colchester Central exit onto the a133. Straight over the next two roundabouts leading onto Cowdray Avenue. At the double roundabout take a right at the first roundabout and then straight across at the second roundabout. The entrance to the hotel is a few hundred metres down on the left. From Ipswich: From a12 take exit for Colchester North onto a1232; follow the Ipswich road for approximately 2 - 3 miles, until you approach a double roundabout. Straight over both roundabouts following the Ipswich road. The entrance to the hotel is a few hundred meters down on the left. By rail: Just a 3/4 hr ride by intercity train from London's Liverpool Street Station. Colchester is well served by two local railway stations: Colchester Town (St. Botolphs) and Colchester North. By air: Stansted International Airport, off the a12, is approximately 40 miles away.
