Treak Cliff Cavern (13 km) - An underground world of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, rock and cave formations, minerals and fossils. There are rich deposits of the rare and beautiful Blue John Stone, and the show caves include the Witch's Cave, Aladdin's Cave and Fairyland Grotto. Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern are the only places in the world whre Blue John Stone can be found

Peveril Castle (13 km) - The romantic ruins of this Norman fortress are situated high on a rocky crag and the views from the great square tower of the surrounding Peak District are breathtaking. Sir Walter Scott glamourised the castle in his novel, Peveril of the Peak.

Peak Cavern (13 km) - Peak cavern is One of the most spectacular natural limestone caves in the Peak District, with an electrically-lit underground walk of about half a mile. Ropes have been made for over 500 years in the `Grand Entrance Hall', and traces of a row of cottages and the ruins of Peveril Castle can be seen along the riverside walk. The Cavern has the largest natural cave entrance in Britain and deeper into the cavern you can hear the source of the river Styx in a chamber known as the Devil's Cellar. Guided tours are available and special events run throughout the year

Paradise Mill (14 km) - A working silk mill until 1981, with restored jacquard hand looms in their original location. Knowledgeable guides, many of them former silk mill workers, illustrate the silk production process with the help of demonstrations from weavers. Exhibitions and room settings illustrate life in Paradise Mill in the 1930's

Poole's Cavern (Buxton Country Park) (1 km) - Limestone rock, water, and millions of years created this natural cavern containing thousands of crystal formations. A 45-minute guided tour leads the visitor through chambers used as a shelter by Bronze-Age cave dwellers, Roman metal workers and as a hid Macclesfield Silk Museum (14 km) - The story of silk in Macclesfield, told through a colourful audio-visual programme, exhibitions, textiles, garments, models and room settings. The Silk Museum is part of the Heritage centre, a restored Georgian Sunday school, which runs a full programme of performing arts events

Gawsworth Hall (17 km) - This fine Tudor black-and-white manor house was the birthplace of Mary Fitton, thought by some to be the `Dark Lady' of Shakespeare's sonnets. Pictures and armour can be seen in the house, which also has a tilting ground - now thought to be a rare example
