Upton House (10 km) - The house, built of mellow local stone, dates from 1695, but its outstanding collections are the chief attraction. They include paintings by English and Continental Old Masters, Brussels tapestries, S?vres porcelain, Chelsea figures, 18th-century furniture
Rousham House (16 km) - This attractive mansion was built by Sir Robert Dormer in 1635. During the Civil War it was a Royalist garrison. The house contains over 150 portraits and other pictures, and also much fine contemporary furniture.
Broughton Castle (4 km) - Built by Sir John de Broughton, then owned by William of Wykeham, and later by the first Lord Saye and Sele, the castle is an early 14th-and mid 16th-century house with a moat and gatehouse. Period furniture, paintings and Civil War relics are displayed.
Farnborough Hall (10 km) - A classical mid 18th-century stone house with notable plasterwork; the entrance hall, staircase and two principal rooms are shown. The grounds contain charming 18th-century temples, a 3/4-mile terrace walk and an obelisk.
Compton Verney (19 km) - Compton Verney is a new art gallery, founded by Sir Peter Moores, in a restored 18th century Robert Adam mansion in Warwickshire. The collection has Over 800 works of art, including British Portraits and British Folk Art, many of which have never been on public view before. There is a programme of contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year
Deddington Castle (9 km) - The large earthworks of the outer and inner baileys can be seen; the remains of 12th-century castle buildings have been excavated, but they are not now visible.
Directions:
From the m40, take the junction 11 exit and follow the signs for Banbury town centre off of the motorway roundabout. Take the a4260 towards Adderbury. Go through the traffic lights, up the hill and turn right at Oxford Road T-junction. Take the first right into Old Parr Road and left into Lucky Lane.
