Local Insider

Must See:
Gyeongbok Palace The Royal Palace of Gyeongbokkung was built by the first Yi dynasty king and remained the royal residence for around 200 years. The Japanese occupation and the Korean War saw all but ten of the original buildings survive; however, the entire complex has now restored to its original splendour. Also of great interest on the grounds of the palace is the National Folk Museum, which displays a large collection of items from the daily lives of Koreans throughout history.

Insa-Dong
This small street in downtown Seoul is filled with stores selling Korean antiques, pottery, paintings and embroidery, books and more. Insa-dong is also famous for its beautiful traditional tea houses and delicious Korean restaurants, including those that specialise in vegetarian cuisine.

Korean Folk Village
The Korean Folk Village is an open-air community preserving many features of Korean culture and heritage. Actual potters, miller, weavers, smiths and other craftsmen carry on traditions of their ancestors while the traditional marketplace offers plenty of crafts and tasty treats for sale. Twice daily there are farmers' music and dance performances. A half-day tour can be organised, leaving from the hotel, by contacting the Guest Relations Officer.

Itaewon
More than 1500 small shops offering custom-made suits, sportswear, leather apparel and ski wear at a fraction of their overseas prices. The hotel provides a complimentary daily shuttle bus service to and from Itaewon for hotel guests. Please inquire with the Concierge for departure times.

Demilitarized Zone - Panmunjon
Panmunjom is a truce village located along the cease-fire line established at the end of the Korean War in 1953. The Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) separates North and South Korea and is the closest possible point to North from the South where visitors are allowed. Access to Panmunjom is permitted through tour groups only.

Must Do:
Traditional Korean Cuisine
the best way to sample a selection of the finest, traditional Korean foods is by selecting the "table d'hote". This set course menu usually includes standard side dishes, kalbi (barbequed beef), seasonal vegetables, seasonal cold and hot dishes, soup and rice. We highly recommend our traditional Korean restaurants, Hangawi in the hotel.

Korean Performances
Koreans excel in theatre productions and performing arts so take in a traditional Korean performance or opera while you are in Seoul. The National Theatre of Korean offers various performances by the national drama company and the national orchestra; LG Arts Centre offers drama, dance and musicals; and Chongdong Theatre features the traditional dance performance known as Pungmul.

Contact our Concierge for current performances schedules and ticket reservations.

Yongsan Electronics Market
Seek out the latest Korean and foreign-manufactured appliances, audio equipment, computers and telephones. Prices of domestic brands are approximately 10-20% lower than in regular stores, while imported products can be 40-50% less.

Han River Cruise
A Han River is a spectacular way to view Seoul's riverfront areas, especially by night. Several boats ply the water of the Han, making one-way and round-trip tours.

Please contact the Concierge for departure times and reservations.

Tips:
The best method of transportation from Incheon International Airport to the hotel is the Korean City Air Terminal (KCAT) Airport Limousine Buses, which make round trips between the airport and the KCAT, departing every ten minutes for the price of W12,000. Travelling time varies depending on traffic conditions but allow approximately 90 minutes for your journey. The KCAT is conveniently located close to the hotel in the Korean World Trade Centre complex. On arrival, please use the InterContinental Seoul's telephone and a complimentary car will bring you within five minutes. We also highly recommend you take advantage of the KCAT when departing Korea. Special services include check-in and passport control services for Korean Airline and Asiana Airline. Tipping is generally not necessary or expected in Korea. A 10% service charge is automatically added to the bill at most hotels and restaurants. Smile and say a word or two in Korean to anyone from taxi drivers to store owners and the world is your oyster! Benefits include friendly service, kind advice and discounted prices at the markets. Don't worry about pronunciation. It's more important that you tried. Start with "Ah-nyong-ha-se-yo" (hello).
